Owner-occupied housing project pitched in New Haven

The Neighborhood Housing Services of New Haven is planning to develop an affordable multifamily owner-occupied housing development on vacant lots it owns along Hazel Street.

The properties at 88, 94 and 98 Hazel St., would be combined then subdivided into four lots, each with one building, and become 86-88 Hazel St., 90-92 Hazel St., 94-96 Hazel St., and 98-100 Hazel St.

Each lot would have a two-family, duplex-style home for a total of eight new apartments. Each building will have an owner-occupant who will live in one unit and rent out the second unit.

According to the application, “the project will simultaneously create desperately needed housing and allow four, low- or moderate-income homeowners to build wealth. Additional homeownership will strengthen the community, fill in gaps in the streetscape, provide affordable housing, and increase property values.”

NHS said it has designed the proposed units to be compatible with the surrounding residential  neighborhood.

The NHS is a community-based nonprofit aimed at providing homeownership opportunities in city neighborhoods, and the group will provide an educational and financial coaching program that will be available to the four homeowners.

Construction is slated to begin this month and wrap up by December 2024, according to the application.
