RTX, Electric Boat secure $152M in military contracts

Two of Connecticut’s largest manufacturers and employers received more than $152.5 million combined in U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) contracts in April, according to information from the federal agency.

East Hartford-based aerospace and engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney, which is a subsidiary of RTX Corp., secured three contracts in April worth almost $100 million; Groton-based submarine maker Electric Boat Corp. won a contract worth more than $53 million.

Electric Boat’s new contract is to continue the military’s New England Maintenance Manpower Initiative, which supports non-nuclear maintenance for submarines at the company’s Naval Submarine Support Facility in New London. All work will be performed in Groton and is expected to be completed by next April, according to the DoD.

RTX and Pratt’s contracts break down as follows:

  • $73.9 million for spare engines used in the Air Force’s F100 Production Programs. All the work for this will be done in East Hartford and is expected to be complete by the end of this year.
  • $13.7 million for contractor engineering and technical services in support of F-15 and F-16 aircraft engines. Specifically, the contract includes giving on-site training and advice “to elevate the technical skill and abilities of personnel responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Raytheon Technologies Corp. equipment and systems to the level of self-sufficiency.” Training included in the contract will take place across several military bases across the country and world, according to the DoD contract, and is expected to finish sometime in 2026.
  • $11.2 million for spare parts for the Marine Corps, including: three roll post ducts and nozzles; three roll post hydraulic control units; three driveshaft assemblies; and four spare clutches. The contract is also for labor work related to supporting the Air Force’s Lots 15-17 F-35 Lighting II Joint Strike Fighter; 20% of work will be performed in East Hartford, 2.3% in Hartford and the rest elsewhere. Work for the contract is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
